2011-01-07

So tonight I was at this awesome party thrown by the Animation Guild, and some friends and I decided to go people watching tomorrow. So that's what to expect for Saturday!

But today I've got a really random bunch of drawings.

This is a John Carter page. The spider-fellow is Ghek, super-psychic and emotionless until he meets Tara of Helium. On the right is an unfinished Tars Tarkas. I expect to finish this one down the line.

This page has some costume doodles, mostly troubleshooting my halloween costume from 2 Halloweens ago, Tars Tarkas!

This is a "Superman" page! This styles is from me fusing some "Young Justice" studies with the "Gargoyles" studies.

Until tomorrow!

2011-01-06

So tonight I did a ton of studies from "Gargoyles," and I think something really clicked.

You can kind of see it on this first page with the David Hammerfist heads.

It really starts to show up here with the Jokers, though.

And definitely on this last page with the Katana Gunslingers. I'm diggin that fusion of the "Avatar" and the "Gargoyles" styles.

Looking back at it, the "Gargoyles" characters are VERY solidly drawn. Their features are exaggerated too, since they're very human-like monsters. I think this makes the "tricks" that create a solid drawing more obvious, so that when you look at a more subtle human character you able to say "hey, that's the same thing they did with Goliath, only very subtle because it's a woman and not a giant purple monster."

Forgive the rant. It helps me sort out what I got from my studies.

So until tomorrow (or later today...)

2011-01-05 (a day and change late)

Hey hey,
These are from the 5th but I didnt get around to posting them earlier.

I was doing a lot of "Avatar the Last Airbender" studies. Man, that's a great lookin show! I love it when I can pop on a DVD and the drawings are good enough that I can pause any frame and work from that. Not all are that good looking...

Anyhoo!

Not my best page... Joker and David Hammerfist here, and tonight's studies have already given me some insight as to what doesnt work with these...

I drew these while at dinner with my girlfriend Lis and my friend Sotta.

You can see some of the "Avatar" influence in these guys.

I'm right on track with the drawings from my head, but I'm a bit behind with the studies. I'll catch up though!

Until later today when I post YESTERDAY'S pictures!

PS: I know there's only a tiny trickle of people that actually look at this blog, but if any of you happen to say "I KNOW WHAT'S WRONG WITH THAT DRAWING" and you feel like doing a draw over, I'd REALLY REALLY appreciate it! The whole point of this undertaking is to level up my art and to learn every single day!

2011-01-04 (a day late...)

I was tired last night so I didnt post until now, but I think I got some pretty cool drawings in!

Here are some re-design doodles of "David Hammerfist," from my film "David Hammerfist: Hammerfists of Fury." On day Matt and I will do another Hammerfist adventure...

Random doodles...

This last page is another attempt at my favorite DC character, the Joker.

Until later tonight!

Hey folks!
So this is a random bunch of drawings.

This is a page of (mostly) Katana Gunslingers, a type of hero from a comic I drew last year.

This is a redesign attempt at the Storm Toads from "Bucky O'Hare," one of my favorite retro-properties. There will probably be a TON from BOH up here.

My friendwas telling me about a project he's working on and I asked if I could draw some pics of the main character. This is All (pronounced "Al"). It's kind of a philosophical dissection of god and the spiritual realm.

Anyhoo, see ya tomorrow!

Hey guys,
Today I was watching "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" while drawing, so I think all the main guys appear in these pages. The best is definitely the drawing of Frank on the last page.

Quick note, this next page has some character designs for a project my friend and I have been tinkering with for years now. The girl's name is Emily, and she's one of the main characters for "Fearbot"

More to come!

New Year's Resolution: 2,011 in 2011

So, I'll start this by saying that by many standards I'm a pretty good artist. But more than 2 1/2 years after graduation I'm not getting any work, so I guess I need to be better! I came up with a New Year's Resolution that should fix that situation.

In 2011 I will do 2,011 pages of drawing, and I'll be keeping myself honest right here on this blog.

"HOLY SHIT, THAT'S A LOT," you may say. That's what I said, that's what my girlfriend said. It's really not though. If I do 6 pages each day, I'll be more than fine. The one "catch" is that half of the 2,011 pages must be studies. The idea is that not only will I force myself to draw more often, but I'll force myself to study and learn from the masters.

Anyway, here are the rules I've set forth:

1. I must do at least 1,005 pages of drawings from my head or from real life.

2. I must do at least 1,006 pages of studies.

3. Since I do a lot of storyboards for my portfolio, those count. They will be added to the 2,011 once the board is finished.

1 page of 3 panels = 1 page of the 2,011

So follow along on this blog, or follow along at home with your own 2,011 drawings!

Oh, one last note. Since the studies are not my own work, I wont be posting each individual page of them. I dont want ANY confusion as to what's my work and what's not, and I dont want anybody thinking that I'm taking credit for the master's work. Instead I'll probably post a photo of all the pages and list who I was looking at that particular day.

Anyway, here are my first 6 pages. I went people watching in Santa Monica today.

So this fellow was interesting. He was Middle Eastern, and he had one leg and a three legged dog. He also does not like being drawn. See how the paper is dirty and wrinkled? That's from when he yelled at me and tore the page out of my sketch book!

Rule 4. of 2,011 in 2011: be more sly.

These aren't from Santa Monica. I was watching "Magnum Force" with my dad. Clint Eastwood's a badass. Oh, and those are Tharks at the bottom.

Anyhoo, I'll try to update this daily, but I might not be able to. I WILL be keeping up on the pages, and I WILL post everything, if not every day.

PS: Anybody have suggestions on who to do master copies from?
